Is the world really punk? The program Underground Music has been part of INDIE over the past 7 years; it has a very specific focus and brings five new productions that viscerally bring together film and music. By coincidence, two of them are about the freedom of being radically a rock musician in two Eastern countries where education is extremely rigid: China and Japan. Kevin Fritz’s Wasted Orient follows the difficult path taken by Joyside, a punk band from Beijing, whose life philosophy is nothing more than "fuck society". Pamela Valente, from Sao Paulo, races after the underground rock scene in the film Rock ¥n Tokyo, in a city where the Japanese thoroughly enjoy rock!

Paul Rachman (USA) presents an encompassing view of the history of North-American hardcore in the 80s in his adaptation of Steven Blush’s book American Hardcore.

The program also includes Wojciech Bozyk’s documentary Rockin' Brooklyn, Brooklyn’s current alternative pop that has gained popularity in the New York scene.†And finally, a special, almost retro film for the Sao Paulo edition of INDIE: Justin Mitchell’s Drive Well, Sleep Carefully, in which the director films the band Death Cab For Cutie’s USA tour. Tune in! (F.A)
