Thinking in images, making screenplays out of stories, producing and making… Filmmaking is a long, complex process that requires collective action and decisions. The first film is above all an act of courage, almost of faith. It is to launch oneself into an adventure about which very little is know at the beginning, and moreover, to allow spectators to judge one’s work at the end.†Indie 2007 wishes to bet on these new filmmakers; in this special World Festival selection for Sao Paulo, we highlighted those film directors that are making their first or second film.

The World Festival will show 14 films made in 10 countries, which will not be shown commercially in Brazilian movie theaters. The New Directors/New Films program contains productions by a new generation of filmmakers, including Gil Kofman (The Memory Thief), Todd Rohal (The Guatemalan Handshake) and Michael Knowles (Room 314) from the USA, Ying Liang (The Other Half) from China, and Rabah Ameur-ZaÔmeche (Bled Number One / Back Home) from Algeria. Additionally, two films that were very successful in past editions of INDIE were included: Four Eyed Monster, by the North-American directors Susan Buice and Arin Crumley, who have innovated significantly in the distribution of this film; also the wonderful documentary The Shutka Book of Records, by Aleksandar Manic.

The Sao Paulo edition also includes films from the Dark Matinee program, which in past years has brought to INDIE the gloomy, humorous and strange side of the fantastic film genre; its curator is the film critic Bernardo Krivochein. In this spirit, there is Nisha Inalsingh’s documentary, Huld·folk 102, about the Iceland’s “invisible people”; and Alex Orr’s (USA) absurd comedy Blood Car. Especially from the 2006 edition, what could we say about a film that blends beaches, a band composed of girls and a monster? Fun in Stomp! Shout! Scream!

Many film directors and thousands of professionals had to decide, choose, assemble and plan so that we could enjoy the cinema. Now the choice is yours; make your indie! (D.A)
