Liang Renwei and his pregnant girlfriend leave the city and go back to the small town in China's countryside where Renwei was raised. He gets a job with his uncle, responsible for enforcing the Chinese Birth Control and One Child Policy in the town. The contemplation of beautiful natural landscape and apparent peacefulness are broken by the ghosts of the past that surround the space.

About the director Zhao Dayong studied oil painting and plastic arts at the Lu Xun Art Academy, and worked for many years as a painter and advertising director. His first movies were the praised documentaries Street Life and Ghost Town, produced through Lantern Films, a production company founded by him and the North-American journalist David Bandursky. Shadow Days is his second venture into fiction filmmaking, while his first, The High Life, won prizes at the Hong Kong Film Festival and Mannheim-Heidelberg
